On Friday 29th December, B.W.Y Canine Ltd finished the year with an unexpected trip to Manchester, to join two stars of UK television on the BBC breakfast sofa.

Stuart Phillips and tobacco and vape detection dog Griff joined Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt to talk about recent enforcement operations with Staffordshire Trading Standards.

My reason for posting this video and write up is because I fear handlers are relying on a TFR (trained final response) from their detection dog, influenced by trainers who do only train, trainers who have never been under pressure on a live operation to find the drugs, tobacco, cash, or firearms. Of course, it depends on what the handler is doing with their detection dog, and some might argue that my post it not relevant, especially to people who only do scent work or detection activities for fun.

Are detection dogs being trained correctly for their role and do you know the operational standards for the job you are training your dog for.

A question I often get asked, "can a detection dog screen shipping containers effectively without having to use air sampling equipment" ?

My answer is without a doubt, yes, detection dogs from my experience are the best way to screen shipping containers and I don't believe an air sampling kit is needed.

Multi award-winning search dog instructor Stu Phillips is to speak as a guest instructor at the 11th annual international K9 Cop Magazine conference and vendor show, taking place in Nashville Tennessee on the 13th, 14th and 15th September 2022.

A trading standards raid in Croydon last week seized 175,000 illegal cigarettes estimated to be worth more than £100,000. The discovery, made by specialist search dogs from Wales based B.W.Y Canine, has prompted the council to issue an urgent health warning over sales of cheap tobacco, and the threat to youngsters lured by the offer of cut-price cigarettes.

When Trading Standards want to find a hidden stash of illegal tobacco, they normally require the expertise of a highly trained canine. One of the most sophisticated illegal tobacco concealments was found recently in a Derbyshire shop, thanks to Cooper, a four year old search dog who has undergone many months of specialist training. We talk to Stuart Phillips, possibly the UKs most experienced illegal tobacco search expert during Operation CeCe in Derbyshire.

Meet Griff and Kevin, two new puppies being trained to help with the fight against illegal tobacco crime in the UK.

Griff, a 15 week old Springer Spaniel from Jersey and Kevin, a 13 week old Working Cocker Spaniel bred here in Wales are to be trained by multi-award winning dog trainer Stuart Phillips from Pembrokeshire based B.W.Y Canine.

Detection dogs are known for their excellent sense of smell, and now one has started work at a Scottish whisky distillery.

Rocco, an 18 month old Working Cocker Spaniel is being used to identify imperfections in whisky casks at the Grant's Whisky distillery in Girvan in Ayrshire.

Two Working Cocker Spaniels from Pembrokeshire based company B.W.Y Canine Ltd have been selected to take part in a very special sniffer dog project.

Details of the project remain a closely guarded secret and the dog trainer selected to take part in this exciting project, Stuart Phillips has said that the project is commercially, very sensitive.
